Charity Girl. A young and lovely runaway alone on the road to London Miss Charity Steane is running away from the drudgery of her aunt's household to find her grandfather. Not expecting her visit, the old gentleman is not in London but is away in the country.

The first time the young Viscount Desford saw the girl, he thought she was a child/5. "Charity Girl," a euphemism for a woman who has consensual sexual relations with a man, is an engrossing, compassionate and provocative novel, one which examines the consequences of repression dressed-up as national security.

In this light, Lowenthal has crafted a work that adroitly links the past to the present/5(50). Charity Girl examines one of the darkest periods in our history, when patriotic fervor and fear led to devastating consequences.

During World War I, the U.S. government went on a moral and medical campaign, quarantining and incarcerating young women who were thought to have venereal diseases.

They were called charity girls/5. Charity Girl is not one of my favourite books by Heyer. It focuses, in part, on the results of loving unwisely and flouting society's rules.

The outcome is felt most by the children, in this case Charity Steane who is abandoned by her father and has to live on the cold charity of an unloving aunt, forced to be an unpaid servant for her five daughters/5().

In this book, you have a Viscount who saves the young Charity Steane from her life of drudgery in her aunt's household. There's also Henrietta Silverdale, Viscount Desford's best friend who gets involved with protecting Charity/5(5).

A young and lovely runaway alone on the road to London Miss Charity Steane is running away from the drudgery of her aunt's household to find her grandfather. Not expecting her visit, the old gentleman is not in London but is away in the country. A scandal broth in the making. The Story Behind The Book: Charity Girl was inspired by a line in Susan Sontag’s AIDS and Its Metaphors, in which she likens the incarceration of American women during World War I to the internment of Americans of Japanese ancestry during World War II.

The author uses spiraling tension and haunting imagery as he traces Frieda's journey from awkward adolescent into full-fledged womanhood. Charity Girl is not for the faint of heart.
